Southampton comes together for First Mental Health Friendly Day

Recently, our city celebrated its first-ever Southampton Mental Health Friendly Day, bringing together residents, community groups, charities, public services and businesses in a citywide programme of activities focused on wellbeing, connection and community spirit.

Support mental wellbeing

Coordinated by us and supported by Southampton City Council and the NHS, the initiative saw organisations across the city join forces to create opportunities for people of all ages to connect with others and support their mental wellbeing.

Reflecting on the success of the week, Sue Hayward, Chair of our Board of Trustees, said: “It was wonderful to see so many organisations, groups and individuals coming together to support mental health in our city and to boost social connectedness.

“This was a truly citywide initiative. It demonstrated how important connection, community and kindness are to positive mental wellbeing.”

Power of Hello

Sue also highlighted the impact of our Power of Hello campaign, saying that even a simple greeting can make a real difference, adding that there was a ‘very friendly vibe’ across the city throughout the week.

Activities taking place throughout the week included wellbeing walks on Southampton Common, a gardening workshop at Wickets Care Home, art, drama and dance sessions, community café events and a range of sporting opportunities.

Promoting positive mental health

Sport in Mind hosted a special ‘Try Pickleball’ session at Jubilee Sports Centre alongside its regular yoga session at Northam Community Centre, while Round About Café created a welcoming space for people to meet and socialise. Unpaid Carers Support Southampton also brought carers together to help reduce loneliness and isolation and promote positive mental health.

A wide range of organisations supported our citywide initiative, including Hampshire and Isle of Wight NHS Healthcare Trust, Alder Trust, Atherley Bowls & Social Club, Round About Café, Sport in Mind, Communicare in Southampton, KvLS Mental Health Support, which held a special anniversary celebration and opened new premises with Sue as VIP guest, and Southampton City Council – to name just a few.

Social connectedness

Our event showcased the fantastic work already taking place across Southampton to boost social connectedness. Southampton Mental Health Friendly Day provided a valuable opportunity to highlight activities while encouraging even more people to get involved.

Southampton residents and those working in the city can continue to explore groups, activities and support through our Social Connectedness Guide at SMHN.
